CONGRESO ANA SANCHEZ2Held on November 3rd and 4th, 2008, within the activities of the 15th International Exhibition of Graphic Humour. Important experts on the field of Graphic Humour attended from Latin America, Spain, France and Portugal. Some of the most important national authors took part, such as Forges, Kap, Toni Batllori, etc., as well as international authors: Roberto Goiritz from Paraguay, Pedro Sol from Mexico, Ana Sánchez from Costa Rica, Agustín Sánchez González from Mexico or Jorge Montealegre from Chili.

The recurrent theme was the Millennium Goals and the role cartoonists play in those goals.

NY08 053The AECID and the FGUA decided to make a DVD-book where there are brief biographic notes of the authors included, as well as an institutional introduction by the President of Government, and by the presidents of the two sponsoring institutions of this project.

The essential part of this DVD is composed of the interviews with the authors, their creative process through the creation of their cartoons about the first goal of the Millennium Goals, which proposes “to eradicate poverty and hunger”, and more specifically:

  • To halve between 1990 and 2015 the percentage of people whose income is less than a dollar a day.
  • To halve between 1990 and 2015 the percentage of people who suffer from hunger.

portada001Number 39 of the Quevedos Magazine (published on January 2009) was dedicated almost in its entirety to Cartoonists for the Millennium Goals. It was a selection of articles, activities and works of the different authors and experts in the field, made with the aim of raising awareness among and informing the readers about the need to attain the first of the Millennium Goals.

The latest international events have only turned the need to achieve the first of the Millennium Goals more urgent, which is to end hunger and poverty. It seemed important and appropriate to us to summon the cartoonists in order to participate with their drawings and relevant cartoons in this project, and for them to speak up to the world to spread the idea that the more awareness is raised about this problem, the closer we will be to solve it.
